Robert Campbell — “Instant Author” and the Creative Process
Dec 14 @ 6:00 pm – 6:30 pm

Guest: Robert Campbell
Location: Seattle, WA — LIVE IN OUR STUDIO!!
Project: “Instant Author” and the Creative Process

Robert Campbell has been a software developer for 30 years. He graduated with a degree in Design from Southern Illinois University where R. Buckminster Fuller was in residence. In the early 80’s he became a game programmer, and created a music game called ‘Fun with Music’, and later a music app called ‘Instant Music’ published by Electronic Arts to some critical acclaim. He worked on some 8-bit Nintendo games before embarking on a career as a Windows developer. He worked on several multimedia titles for Microsoft such as Cinemania and Music Central.

He is a lifelong recreational musician and is currently working on a book about his experience of coming to terms with his own musical identity.

He also works occasionally on a so-called ‘visual music’ app he created in 1983 and he swears to finish someday.

On a personal note (from Jeff McCord):

Robert was there at the beginning of the modern gaming industry! A game designer at Epyx from 1982 to 1984, Robert and I were co-workers (each on our own independent projects) at the time that the game industry was being defined. The big-three gaming computers of the day were, arguably, the Atari 800, Commodore 64, and Apple II.

Robert has had a long career since those days as a coder and project designer, but he has never given up his love for Games, Music, and the Creative Process in general. A long-time friend, Robert and I will chat about those subjects and more, and we will also toy with the idea of what it means to be an “Instant Author” (a concept related to a book project that Robert is currently working on).

After seeing some success with it in their home games, they created a free, downloadable version for anyone who cared to grab it. They figured a few dozen people would have a look. Instead, hundreds did, and it fast became one of the most popular variants of Fudge out there, spawning its own thousands-strong discussion list and eventually helping to launch Evil Hat as a commercial game company.

Rumors swirl that several Indian nations have forged alliances with the British, the Spanish, and even the Russians. Some leading scientists even believe these primeval lands may be home to the mastodon, the megalolynx, and other Ice Age behemoths. But no one will know until someone with the courage, mettle and skill-set to make the perilous voyage ventures forth and returns to tell the tale. That person is you.

In Meriwether, you play as Captain Lewis, the man President Thomas Jefferson selected and specially trained to accomplish this mission. You’ll join forces with your long-time friend and former commanding officer, William Clark, and with him you’ll form the Corps of Discovery, a party of hand-picked soldiers, interpreters, and hunters to whom you’ll trust your life every day of the 28-month journey.

Shadowgate — A first-person fantasy adventure
Dec 15 @ 2:30 am – 3:00 am

Guest: Dave Marsh, Zojoi
Location: Charlottesville, VA
Project: Shadowgate — A first-person fantasy adventure (successful Kickstarter)

The creators of Shadowgate are developing a new, epic version of the first-person fantasy adventure smash hit.

“The last thing that you remember is standing before the wizard Lakmir as he gestured wildly and chanted in an archaic tongue. Now you find yourself staring at an entryway which lies at the edge of a forest.”

So begins the legend of Shadowgate, the grandaddy of all ‘point and click’ fantasy adventure games – a title that paved the way for a host of fantasy games to follow. In Shadowgate, you move from room to room through the labyrinths of the living castle, confronting the devilish denizens and confounding the fiendish traps laid by the Warlock Lord. Your quest is to fulfill an ancient prophecy by gathering various objects of power along with three ancient artifacts. Once assembled, these relics of old comprise the Staff of Ages – the only weapon that can stop the traitorous sorcerers’ plan of unleashing the Behemoth, a titan of tremendous power, on an unsuspecting world.

We are proud to announce that we are creating a new Shadowgate! While we published the original game on over ten different platforms, this Shadowgateis NOT A PORT. It’s a re-imagining that includes a lot of new features, exciting updates and ingenious additions that will add even more to the mythology and expand upon the original story of our fantasy classic. This is the Shadowgate that we always wanted to make and we are thrilled that we have the opportunity to capture the unique excitement of the original while expanding on the world and mythos like never before. And if you’ve never played a first-person adventure title, this is the one to start with!

Location: Lynnwood, WA — LIVE IN OUR STUDIO!!
Project: Tiny Barbarian DX — Retro 2D Action Game (active Kickstarter)

What is best in life? To crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and to play retro 2D action games.

Modern games are fun, but I like the classics! I love that I can often play through one in under an hour–simple, challenging, and satisfying! Those games were short by necessity, but brevity IS the soul of wit, and it’s not a bad way to do things.

Inspired by SF and Fantasy pulp stories, Tiny Barbarian is made up of individual episodes that, combined, offer a huge amount of content, but individually can be completed in under an hour, while still offering an exciting and complete experience. And we’re not asking you to pay individually for a series of episodes. Nope! Buy in once and you’ll receive each episode as soon as it is complete!

Questionable Fun: Hilarious Answers to Irrelevant Questions!
Dec 15 @ 5:00 am – 5:30 am

Guests: Nick, Amy, Robots and Red Tape
Location: Huntington, WV
Project: Questionable Fun: Hilarious Answers to Irrelevant Questions! (active Kickstarter)

An ice-breaking, crowd-warming party game for geeks and gamers. It’s somewhere between PG-13 and R. That depends on you.

Each turn one player reads a question from a card. The other players write down their funniest answers. All the answers are passed to one player who reads them all out loud.  The first player picks his favorite answer and the winning answer gets a point. First one to 5 points wins.

All of the questions are hypothetical and designed with one thought in mind: give players enough imagery to see some funny answer possibilities but leave them enough room for their own creativity and style.  Some of the questions set the players up to easily answer with politically incorrect, slightly raunchy, or generally inappropriate humorous responses. Some are just silly or even look totally innocent. Either way, questions leave enough room so your group can tailor answers to their own style.

1969 – The Space Race — table-top game
Dec 15 @ 7:00 am – 7:30 am

Guest: Eric Reasoner, CoffeeHaus Games
Location: Lynnwood, WA — LIVE IN OUR STUDIO!!
Project: 1969 – The Space Race — table-top game (active Kickstarter)

The Space Race has begun! Which nation will make it to the moon and pull out ahead?

“No nation which expects to be the leader of other nations can expect to stay behind in this race for space.” – John F. Kennedy, May 25, 1961

The newly elected president John F. Kennedy gives a speech to the nation, touching on several crucial points. One of them is the conquest of space, and more precisely of the Moon. He promises that, by the end of the decade, an American will set foot on the moon. This sets off a race between the countries with the most advanced space technology to be the first to conquer space. You are in charge of the space program of one of the nations competing to be the first to the Moon. You have to plan your research strategy, hire brilliant scientists to improve your technical achievements, and perform training missions, all with the ultimate goal of delivering a man to the Moon… before the end of 1969!

The game was a critical darling of Essen and sold out very quickly. We would like to work with Cranio Creations to produce a second printing of the game for American audiences who missed out on the first printing. This second printing will be the same high quality game as the first edition with some great additions if we can hit the stretch goals. We have some really exciting stretch goals in mind for everyone so let’s take this project to the moon!

There will be many puzzles to solve, horror sections and some more narrative focused areas. So we hope it will have a range of elements for everyone to enjoy.

As the galaxy’s empires argued over ownership of the planets, their ancient inhabitants awoke from suspended animation and began exterminating all life in the galaxy. Star by star, the empires crumbled, every inhabited world reduced to irradiated rubble.

Refugees from dozens of races joined forces for one final attack on the enemy homeworld. They planned to use the alien’s own technology to freeze the entire solar system in time, but nature had plans of its own. Ruptures in space-time opened throughout the system, pitching ships back through time and scattering them throughout the galaxy.

The plan is for you to wake several years following the end of civilization. You and your team will help the project in rebuilding first the United States, then the rest of the world. Unfortunately, things don’t always go as planned.

AE-WWII: European Theater – Retro Sci-fi & Occult Horrors in WWII for the table-top.

Based on real WWII experiments and legends from throughout history, AE-WWII is unlike any WWII game you’ve played before.

The game uses an innovative army creation system based on troop types and training levels – not on calculations. The action-point based gameplay is fast and clean with alternating activations and a dynamic morale system that is simple to learn, strategically deep, tactically rich, and fun as hell.

Alliances and Nations In AE-WWII:  Pick your army from the ranks of Allies, Axis, and Communist forces. Simply pick your Nation, and a combination of branches to round out your selection. You can mix and match within your Alliance.

Forsaken Fortress — The Survival RPG
Dec 15 @ 10:00 pm – 10:30 pm

Guest: Photon Productions
Location: New York, NY
Project: Forsaken Fortress — The Survival RPG (active Kickstarter)

A special RPG in which you assemble your team, build and manage your base, collect resources, and survive in a post-apocalyptic world.

Unlike many other existing post-apocalyptic RPGs, Forsaken Fortress emphasizes simulation features such as base building, character personality/interaction, and resource collection. You will need to lead a group of survivors to construct your base and maintain its basic functions, such as electricity generation or food storage. Meanwhile, you will ensure the base’s security by building defenses and setting traps. You will also need to lead your expedition team to the wasteland to gather supplies and to work on missions, balancing their professional skills in order to maximize their effectiveness. Characters in Forsaken Fortress are highly dynamic in their behavior. They have needs, goals and personalities which will influence their daily life and decision making. Some of them may fall in love and some of them may not get along, but all them bring life to the devastated, forsaken world.

Closing Ceremonies
Dec 15 @ 10:30 pm – 11:00 pm

Some of our guests may be sticking around for the 30-minutes of the show. We look forward to hanging out with whomever can join us during this last fun and casual session on Saturday.

Perhaps we may be counting down to the end of another Kickstater campaign this time? Who knows! I *do* know it won’t be the Fargoal 2 Kickstarter campaign in this case though… We’ve already done that!   ;^)
